During Library Year 3 students have been exploring the concept:
'The exploration of Australia impacted on aboriginal culture'.
We watched the video 'Virtual Warrane' and discussed the impact European settlement had on Sydney. We then looked at Melbourne and the change in that location since European settlement. As a class we discussed similarities and differences, between the Sydney and Melbourne experiences, for the aboriginal people. For creativity and fun the students entered the Mini-Melbourne Minecraft world and destroyed the buildings along the Yarra River to reverse the impact caused by Europeans. Lots of fun and we discovered some very skilled 'demolition' experts.
To compliment this task we read Welcome to Country' by Aunty Joy Murphy and Lisa Kennedy.
We discussed how we could pay respect through an 'Acknowledgement of Country. We read examples from governments and organisations and created a list of common words. We used the word bank to write our own acknowledgments that we will read each day in class.
